Testing modern consumer devices is challenging, expensive and has a significant impact on time-to-market.

Testing does not improve device quality, bug fixes do!

All investments in development and integration testing should focus on helping the engineers identify, analyse and fix bugs. This requires sufficient accurate information about the fault either:
to allow immediate diagnosis and rectification, or
to allow recreation of the fault, allowing further investigation.
This requires test data that is not be erroneous or misleading, incomplete or duplicated. Providing large volumes of poor test data will actually reduce the effectiveness of the engineering team and reduce the resulting device quality.

Only skilled and experienced testers can provide anecdotal evidence from manual testing that meets the needs of the engineering team. Rather than executing routine tests, or supervising other staff executing routine tests, these individuals should be focused on:
Defining, rather than executing, routine tests
Executing the complex, specialist tests
Investigating specific faults in detail

Routine prescriptive tests should not be executed manually. This type of testing is repetitive and the process is not stimulating for the individual. Even where a good working environment and good pay scales secure high retention rates for testers, it is very unusual for the test processes to be followed meticulously. Invariably a proportion of test results will be erroneous or misleading, incomplete or duplicated, which hinders the engineering team.
